Fiction

Welcome to the Play Retreat fiction section! Here I will be posting off-topic fiction and general musings. Feel free to give them a read! I must ask they you don’t distribute the files themselves or use them for your own personal gain, instead I would ask that you share the link to this page with your friends instead!

The stories are absolutely free to read, but if you really like them you are welcome to donate to my Kofi pot – I’m not going to gate any content when it comes to my short stories, but every little certainly helps. Enjoy!

The Regent of Estdell

I love writing short stories, but my journey in to true narrative fiction began with a competition for the Pendragon: Campfire Stories competition; while not a successful entry, I was to proud of it to let it fall in to a hidden folder on my PC!
You should also head over to the inkle website and give Pendragon a gander!

Mantis County

This one came about in a conversation with a friend (whose twitter profile you should certainly visit @GalactixGG) about the Praying Mantis and their position on men. I shouldn’t wish to spoil the story, but let me just say it certainly isn’t safe for work.

Carnival

I’m currently crossing my fingers in the hopes that below you will see a link to itch.io for my interactive text adventure about a carnival. This was written in a Fallen London style, which if you haven’t already checked it out you should right here!

I used inkle Studios ‘ink’ markup language to create it; ink is a handy tool for anybody wanting to give narrative design a crack.

Cappuccino

Everybody has dealt with loss in their own way – it’s a sad fact of life, but one that can help us move forward in many ways. I don’t have much in the way of insight or profound comment, but I do have a story for every occasion; I hope you enjoy it.

Azrael

This was one of my stranger ones for University, blending my memories of loss with the strange cultural concoction surrounding themes of death. I didn’t want the piece to be overly serious, but I was insistent on taking popular characterisations of ‘Death’ and giving them my own personal spin.

Promise

Personally I am a fan of this one – although I’m incredibly critical of my own writing, this story seemed to gel thematically. The story came about during an unusual dream, but sees a young woman exploring her sexuality; somehow this was one of the best-graded pieces from my university course.
